CONNECTIONS

Dear Georgina

It has been a while since the last letter and many things have happened. As you know I always loved English, so now I’m studying it at the university. I remember when you told me that I have to study it because I was quite good at it, well now I am officially studying it.

To be honest, at first I wasn’t quite sure about it, but now I like this degree. I’m learning so much not only about English as a language but also about the English culture. You know that I always loved learning about different cultures so I’m happy about it.
Moreover, now I’m in more contact with the language, even when I’m not in the university, therefore, I’m watching films and series and listen to music in English even more than I used to.

Furthermore, I’m getting used to read more in English, so that’s another way in which I’m learning so much English.

This is like a little summary about what has happened, what about you? I’m looking forward to hearing news about you.

Take care
Ana

Dear Damaris

As you know English has been my favourite thing in the world since we were children. Do you remember all those times that I told you about living in the United States or how much I wished to be a bilingual person? I guess that you achieved my dreams before, now you are living in the USA and you speak English very fluently,

As for me, I am also learning as much English than I can, that is the reason why I decided to study English Philology at the University, it was always my passion and I was sure about that choice.
However, I do not only learn English at the Univeristy, I try to be in contact with the language at  every moment.

One of my favourite things to do in order to learn English and improve my pronuciation is to watch tv series such as Friends, Skins, My mad fat diary and How to get away with a murder that are my favourite programs. Besides I try to talk with native English speakers, for instance, I have been talking with an american girl that I met in Murcia.

I'm looking forward to hearing about how excited is your life in the USA

Dear Carol,

Thank you very much for your last letter, I could know how is your new life out of Spain. I thought you might be interested in hearing about all the things I’ve doing lately to improve my English.
As I told you last month I’ve started my new degree on English Studies and that requires having a higher level than I’ve had until now. For this reason, I´ve followed out the advices that my English professor gave me the first classes day.
First of all, I started to watch a TV series called ‘Prison Break’ obviously in English. Meanwhile, I put on the subtitles on the TV so I could read all at the same time I was listening it. Moreover, I’ve hire a particular English teacher for practising my speaking and for improving my fluency. Besides all that, I’ve been reading some English books, listening English radio stations and going out to parties meeting Erasmus people.
I remember my professor said me that I didn’t be put off if  I couldn’t improve as quick as other people did, but I went on with my purpose.  Now I´m so proud of me because I realize how I’m achieving my challenge.
By the way, are you going to come to Spain soon? I´m looking forward to hearing from you.

Love,
Marina

Dear Ana,

In September I came back to Murcia because, as you perfectly know, I´m studying English Philology at the University. Studying English has been my vocation since I was a child and being able to do it is  something that makes me very happy.

Appart from studying and going to classes I do many things in my spare time in order to improve my English. Watching films and TV series is one of my favorite activities of all times and I look for some time to watch a new episode every day; I watch them in English using subtitles because I think that is perfect to improve my pronunciation and vocabulary. Besides, since the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep I listen to American and English music.

Moreover, I´ve been going out with my favorite teacher ever, Jennifer, she´s Canadian and she taught me English for a few years so we are really close friends now. Jenny and I use English when we talk, so I reckon that it´s an amazing way to practice and acquire fluency. To end up, I consider that I´m very lucky to have a native speaker as a friend because she helps me a lot.

What about you? What have you been doing lately? I´m looking forward to meeting you and hearing your amazing stories!

Love,

Marta

WORST JOB

WORST JOB- MARINA TORTOSA FREIXINOS

We usually think about our dream job and all that surround it: a competitive salary, friendly staff, a pleasant working environment and a tolerant boss, but how about our worst job?

I think my worst job would be something related to shops or supermarkets. The first reason would be the fact that you have to work so many hours a day and most of the time standing and it requires a constant energy.  Besides, in this kind of works you usually are exploited and the worst thing is you have an irregular or low salary. Finally, what you are doing it’s not a challenging but something with a routine and boring.

In my grandparents’ job all was different.  They had to work around 10 hours a day and that was normal.  In my grandmother’s case, she had to spend all the day in her job because she worked as a dressmaker in a very big factory and she lived far from there so during the week she  went around 7 o’clock in the morning at the factory and went back home around 8 o’clock at night.
For that time, the salary wasn’t balanced or fair but you just had to be content with it and especially if you were a woman.

I think this epoch was so unfair for women and thanks to the labour of millions of women nowadays we can enjoy lots of rights in the work environment.

WORST JOB

Since I was little, I have always wanted to have a work in which I could travel or at least one that involves going to another places from time to time.Since I was little, I have always wanted to have a work in which I could travel or at least one that involves going to another places from time to time.

Thus, taking into account the previous fact, my worst job would be one in which I had to stay in the same place. I do not want my job to be a routine. I want to work with people and learn new thing from them as well. That is why I am always told that being a teacher would a good job for me because they work in different places when they do no have a permanent job. However I do not want to be a teacher. I cannot see myself working as teacher. I have not thought about what I want work in, but I wish I could travel doing what I like. Morever, I do not want my job to be become boring and monotonous. I do no want to lose the enthusiasm and passion for y job even though I work on it for many years. I think that it would be one of the worst thing that could happen.

WORK CONDITIONS BEFORE

When my grandparents worked, they had it very difficult. They started to work when they were very young thus, they had to leave school in order to help their parents to bring some money to the household. Their salaries were very low. It was enough for surviving, but it was not possible to save money for another things. Furthermore, they worked so many hours, one of my grandparents worked in the field, thus there were not a established timetable. Their conditions were very peccary, they did not have any type of insurances or bonus pay for their holidays. It was quite hard back then but they had to do it to prosper and for their children to have a better life.

WHAT I HAVE DONE THIS WEEK

I finished reading the book for Lengua Inglesa III and kept watching Narcos. Moreover, I listened to new music I discovered on Spotify.

WORST JOB

MY WORST JOB

When I was a child of about three years old, I discovered school and I started loving it. Since that moment, my vocation has been teaching and sharing with others what my real passion is: English.

Due to this fact my worst job would be one in which I could not communicate with other people, for example, working in an isolated office surrounded only by a computer or working at home because I know for sure that I would be the whole day thinking about my personal problems and not focusing on what I really have to do.

Moreover, I have always thought that we have to work in something that we really love and have vocation for, even though sometimes it is very difficult and complicated. However, I think that we need to consider this as an objective in our lives, this is, although it can seem impossible we have to fight for what we really want, otherwise we would be wasting our time doing something that we hate.

All in all, I consider that finding our true vocational job is a need. If we find our perfect job we will be happy and believe me, that is one of the most important things in life.

WORKING CONDITIONS IN THE PAST

My grandparents have told us many times how life (in all aspects) has changed since they were young and my family and I have reflected many times about it.

In the past, my grandparents started working when they were children to bring money home, not to afford some whims or save it as we do nowadays. Likewise, life was very difficult at that time and they needed to eat so that was the first aim of working being children of eight years old. Nevertheless I think that working so young should be forbidden because there is time for everything so we need to enjoy of every single stage of life.

In addition, the working conditions in the past were terrible; workers had almost no rights, only obligations like working for more than eight hours or not having any break to eat. I consider that there are no pros in this situation because they were obligated to be adults when they were only children.

To sum up, working conditions in the past were very hard and as I see it there are no pros but many cons to bear in mind.

WHAT I HAVE DONE TO IMPROVE MY ENGLISH

Apart from studying, this week I re-watched "Billy Elliot", I have also read  a book called "A Love for Life" and as a huge fan of TV series I started a new American one which is called "Riverdale".

Worst work

WORST WORK

For me the worst job would be anyone in wich I couldn't be in touch with other people, for example when I decided what I was to study I was awarness of the works that I could each degree. I wanted to study Biochemestry but then I tought that I didn't want to work in laboratory research because I would be aislated and I would feel alone. I like to work with people, to interact with other personalities and learn new things.
Thus, being aisolated in a room working on my own, not having anyone to talik with  would be the worst work for me. Besides I would like to work at big places and I cannot be in small place such as a laboratory.

WORK CONDITIONS BEFORE

When my grandparents worked they had to deal with very complicated conditions, they used to work unlimited hours per day, they did not have anything like social security and their salary was ery low, it was only enough for food and for mantein their house. My grandparents worked to survive not to be rich, they could not save any money or buy big things, the money that they gain with their work was not enough.
I do no see any pros at the conditions of my grandparent's time, were terrible conditions and they used to work like slaves. Conditions got better over time and my granparents are very happy about it, they do not want what they hae suffer for us.

WHAT I HAVE DONE THIS WEEK

I have read a book in English for Lengua Inlgesa III and I have watched a film for Identidad Cultural. Besides I have listened music everyday, in English of course.

Five Tips for Better Text-Message Marketing

Connecting with consumers when they’re on the go is more important than ever, and text message marketing (also referred to as SMS, or short message service marketing) can be a highly effective technique.
But the proliferation of mobile devices doesn’t guarantee marketing success. If your pitches don’t resonate with consumers and motivate them to act, then your efforts are for naught.
Here are five tips for writing marketing texts that get read and produce results:
1. Be brief and focused.
Your text message should be laser focused and succinct. There’s no room for fluff in mobile marketing. Know who your target audience is and speak directly to it. Leave out extraneous details and simply describe how to take advantage of your offer and its benefits.
2. Avoid hype, slang and abbreviations.
If your text message looks like spam, consumers will delete it without a second thought. It’s critical that you leave out anything that might seem too slick and promotional. That includes marketing hype like “amazing” offers, slang and text abbreviations, all of which cheapen the perception of your brand and can destroy your campaign.
3. Offer something of immediate value.
No one wants to receive texts from a company unless the messages offer something of immediate value. Because text messaging is an instantaneous medium, you should include real-time offers. Whether you’re providing information about a sale or a new product, the message should describe the benefits of acting now.
4. Identify yourself.
How often have you received a text that doesn’t identify the company or brand? Instead, you often see a phone number you don’t recognize and a vague message that could have come from any number of companies. And how often have you simply deleted those anonymous messages? It’s essential that you clearly identify your business or brand to avoid getting the spam treatment.

5. Make consumers feel special.
Don’t clutter consumers’ text message inboxes with offers and news they could easily get from your website or your brick-and-mortar locations. Instead, make recipients of your texts feel they’re special and have qualified for an exclusive promotion. Otherwise, they will most likely opt out of receiving any future texts from you.
(...)
Remember that finding the right messages for your audience will take time and experimentation. But the tips and examples above should help you achieve your goals of getting noticed and making some sales.

  • What I have done to imrove my English

In these past 4 weeks I have done some activities to improve my English. First of all I started to read the book for this subject called 'A Love For Life'. I think reading really helps you a lot when it comes to improve your English, it helps wit vocabulary and grammar consolidatoin as well. It might be a slow process but you can learn a lot from boks.

Another thing that I have done is starting a new TV series. I started season 3 of  Narcos, which is series that mix Spanish and English, but of course i watch it in the original version, and it got subtitles when actos speak in Spanish. It feels a litle bit strange because often it is the other way round but I enjoy it very much.

I think that the most important one and the one that helps me the most is listening to music. I listen to music every day. Since I was 14 I have been listening to music in English and I know many songs by heart by many artists. Furthermore it is a bearale way of learning English. I usually listen to artists such Rihanna and Bruno Mars.

TEXT GIVING ADVICES
What are some important considerations1 when you look for a new job? According to experts, you ought to think about these things
First, know yourself! You should ask yourself exactly what you want from a job. Is it money, interesting work, nice co-workers, or something else? Different people want different things from a job. Assess yourself. Where3 are you now, and where do you want to be?
You also might want to think about your personal relationships. Consider which relationships are going well, which ones are not, and, most importantly, why. This will help you understand how you relate to people you work with.
Make changes! If you had problems in another job (maybe you were always late, or you did not fi nish projects), then you should make changes before you take a new job. It is too late when you are in the job.

WHAT I HAVE DONE TO IMPROVE MY ENGLISH

In these past five weeks what I have done a lot of activities to improve my english.
First of all I have been talking with an american girl who is working at two different high schools here in Murcia, her name s Alessandra and she is from Florida, I met here at the print shop. She could not explain what she wanted because she does not know speak spanish fluently, then she asked me if I could speak English, I said yes and I helped her. We have been talking since then.

Moreover I listen a lof of music in English, honestly I prefer it than music in Spanish. I consider that through music I have learnt more English than through any other way
My favourite singer is Ariana Grande and I listen to her everyday, or almost, I have learnt by heart all her songs and her lyrics, therefore I have learn a lot of English with her songs.

Week 4- TIPS AND ADVICE- MARINA TORTOSA FREIXINOS

  • Text with expressions related to advice.

Dear Sue.
I'm delighted that you are coming to Valencia next month. I think it would be great if you stayed with me and my family, who send you their best wishes. Otherwise, if you prefer, I can easily book you a cheap but comfortable hotel near the beach where you can be more independent.
There are lots of things to do in my city. If I were you, I'd spend some days on the beach relaxing and one or two days sightseeing in the city. There are several interesting museums and art galleries which I'm sure you will enjoy. One place you really should visit is an enormous aquarium called the Oceanographic Park, where you'll want to spend the whole day. Also, you ought to do our excellent theme park, which is about an hour away by bus.
You don't need to bring a lot of clothes as the weather is normally warm and sunny at this time of year. In the evening it's a bit cooler, so you may need a jersey and a jacket.
Please let me know exactly when you are coming so that I can meet you at the airport. It'll be great to see you again so we can get up-to-date with all our news.
Love
Manolo

Something you can’t stopped doing is improve your English. For this reason I have been doing lots of things to increase my level in general. During these four weeks I have started to see a new television series (original version) with English subtitles called “PRISON BREAK”.  I am very surprised because I realize my vocabulary and my lexical are increasing more and more each moment.

Besides, I have read a book for the English Language university subject. The title of the book is “A love for life” and it has allowed me to understand a beautiful story in other language.

It ´s important to mention that I listen in a huge part English songs, and I try to  search the lyrics to learn while I am singing. One of my favourite artists is Beyonce and if I had to choose one of her songs it would be “If I were a boy”.

WHAT I HAVE DONE TO IMPROVE MY ENGLISH

WHAT I HAVE DONE TO IMPROVE MY ENGLISH

Not only in the last four weeks but for a long time I have been doing many interesting things to improve my English. Moreover, I reckon that languages have to be improved day by day and there are many fantastic ways to make it easier.

First of all, I listen to American and English music every single day. Since the moment I wake up (literally) to the moment I go to sleep I put on my favorite playlist and listen carefully to the songs´ lyrics, because I really think that it can be very helpful for our fluency.  However, this practice is not only based in reading the lyrics; we need to listen and keep an eye on the pronunciation of the words.

Secondly and undoubtedly one of my favorite things in life is watching TV series and films in the original score. I have been doing this for a long time and I believe that it is a perfect way to invest our spare time learning and enjoying at the same time. Likewise, my father has learnt a little bit of English by watching films in the original score and it is something admirable. Concretely, the TV series that I have been watching during these four weeks are Game of Thrones, Vikings and Gossip Girl, three amazing series with different accents that enrich us not only linguistically but also culturally.

Last but not least, I had a Canadian teacher for a very long time who is amazing. Her name is Jennifer and she is the best teacher I have ever had so when I started university we continue keeping in touch until today. We talk almost every day about how was our day, what we have planned for the weekend, our future trips etc. Furthermore we send audios to each other talking in English and I consider that it is amazing because I can practice with a native person that helps me to improve in a wonderful way.

To sum up, these are some of the activities that I do every day in order to learn and improve my English. It seems to me that there are many beautiful and creative ways to improve a language, so it is a need for us  to explore them.

MODAL VERBS TEXT

MODAL VERBS TEXT

Maggie: Hi Tom, have you finished your homework?

Tom: Oh hi Maggie. No, I haven’t.

Maggie: The deadline is tomorrow you know so
you have to submit it tomorrow.

-In this sentence, "have to" is used by Maggie to express obligation; the deadline is tomorrow so the homework has to be obligatory submitted by then.

Tom: I can’t make it. I haven’t even started it yet. Can we hand it in next week?

-"Can´t" is used to express that there are not possibilities to hand the homework tomorrow; it seems impossible.

-"Can" used as a question word in this specific context asks for any possibilities to submit the homework after.

Maggie: I don’t know. I think you must finish it by tomorrow. She probably won’t accept projects after tomorrow.

-"Must" here express obligation; Maggie highlights that it is an obligation to hand the project tomorrow with no exceptions.

-"Won´t", the short form of "will not", is used to reflect probability about the future; Maggie tries to convince Tom about the deadline.

Tom: I’ve had so many other things to do. I couldn’t even start it. I don’t know what to do.

-"Could" indicates possibility or ability in the past so, here "couldn´t" means that Tom was not able to start with the homework before.

Maggie: Don’t worry, It’s not very difficult. I finished it in one day.

Tom: Really? Great!

Maggie: First, you should read the article that Mrs. Robinson gave us. It’s about the Mohican Civilization. Then,
you have to design a poster for a play about them – the Mohicans – for the theatre.

-Maggie uses "should" here recommending Tom to read the article that their teacher gave them.

-"Have to", as mentioned before, means here obligation to design a poster.

Tom: Yeah I know but it looks a bit difficult...

Maggie: Not at all...

Tom: Well, I think I can do it. What title shall I use?

-"Can" is used by Tom to express ability; he thinks that he will be able to finish the homework in time.

-"Shall" is a polite form which is used here to ask about some options that Tom could use.

Maggie: You  mustn’t use the same title as anyone else in our class. You have to create your own title.

-"Mustn´t", the negative form of "must", here indicates prohibition to copy the title from others; it has to be original.

-"Have to" as mentioned before expresses obligation to create a different and personal title.

Tom: Okay!

Maggie: Alright?

Tom: Yes, thank you so much Maggie.

Maggie: No problem. Good luck!

TIPS AND ADVICE

 ADVICE TEXT

When people hurt you over and over, think of them like a sandpaper.
They may scratch and hurt you a bit, but in the end...

You end up polished and they end up useless...

When somebody does something wrong to you and it really drove you freakin' mad, don't do the same! Instead, kill them with kindness... 'coz guilty feelings are always the nastiest revenge...

"A duck in the pond is calm and careless, but what you don't see under the water is the struggling and stressed feet."

Lesson: What you see is not always what it seems. Let us know how to transcend in life. We could be like ducks; there's grace under pressure.

Don't ever let yourself get so busy that you miss those little but important extras in life:

* the beauty of a day
* the smile of a friend
* the serenity of a quiet moment alone

For it is often life's smallest pleasures and gentlest joys that make the biggest and most lasting difference...

Sometimes we put too much passion on the biggest dreams and priorities in life that we fail to love the smallest pleasures from simple things. We search so much for the right choices, for the right person, for the right paths to walk through, for the right time, and for the right reasons.

But life isn't about searching for the things that can be found. It is about letting the unexpected happen and finding things you never searched for...

Silence doesn't always mean yes; it may also mean no but it's better left unsaid.
Anger doesn't always mean hatred; it could just be a means of coping up.
Laughter doesn't always mean happiness; sometimes it's just a mask.
Tears don't always mean sorrow; it may also be an outlet of joy.
Staying away doesn't always mean it's the end; it may also mean the best beginning.
And though life is so complicated, it's always beautiful. So live it well.

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.

Remember, today is a gift, that is why it's called the present.

You'll never find anybody that achieves great success in life without a give up story. Nothing comes free and there will come a time when you will and that you, too, will have to give up something good if you want something better.

Touch each day of those you love. Hold them close, even how briefly. The human touch is one of the most comforting things in our world... and one of the most reassuring...

Live with no excuses and love with no regrets. When life gives you 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile.

No one's perfect. Everybody commits mistake, whether we like it or not. Just always remember, a mistake only becomes a mistake when you never learn from it! And that in this life, we never run out of choices...
